So someone wasn't doing their job properly ... aren't screwdrivers
banned? I would always put them in my hold luggage.

I've not had any problems in Europe. There was a period of about a week
or two after the big scare in London, where people were being very, very
limited in what could be taken on board, but that was quickly relaxed to
allow musical instruments as an "extra". I did get stopped a couple of
times and told, "Only one piece of hand luggage," but when I pointed out
what it was, I was allowed to continue without further ado.

Mind you, I'm not a pro and only have the one pair of clarinets to carry
in a BAM Trek case, so there may be issues I'm not aware of ... ?
