Subj: [kl] funny note

Dear fellow clarinetists,

On my R13 A clarinet and my E11 C clarinet, one note in the upper register
(A) has a strange crackling sound, quite hard to describe.
It is like a rasp, or a false note on a violin. Only the A, not Ab or Bb.

I do not hear this on my matched R13 Bb, using the same Bay mouthpiece,
ligature and reed. On the C clarinet I use a Grabner mouthpiece.

An assortment of reeds from different makers and strengths, and different
ligatures, sound the same.

So I believe that it is in the clarinet, not me, not the mouthpiece. It
seems strange that precisely the same funny note happens on two different
clarinets.
( it wasnt so funny when I recently played Mozart clarinet quintet with a
serious string quartet).

Any thoughts on what it might be or how to solve the problem?

Thanks,

Howard
