Jim,
It is indeed a bassoon line. If memory serves, it was originally a
bass clar. line but noone bothers to bring in a bass clar. just for 4
notes, so the bassoon gets it. Unfortunately, the dynamics make it an
awkward fit. Bassoons just don't start on low notes pianissimo so the
clarinet must play much louder than marked in order to dovetail with
the bassoon. I THINK that some recordings have a bass clarinet and it
is possible that the big orchestras, who have a bass player on staff,
use it.
