Hi Myrna:

You've been observant and asked some good questions. Here are the answers
to your questions:

The turn is written incorrectly. It should be played with a B natural
despite what is written. Because this section of the music
is in a major key (B-flat) we would expect the turn to have a whole step on
the top and a half tone down (a leading tone) on the bottom. In a minor
key, we might have a turn with a half step on top and a whole step on the
bottom. It would sound very strange to have a turn with either two half
steps or two whole steps. Any sensitive musician will tell you to play B
natural in this case.

In bar 28, the natural signs have been left out. The passage is a chromatic
scale from high to the d on beat 3 of mm 28. From there the music turns
into a g-minor scale as it heads to the trill and the cadence in g minor in
mm. 29.

The Artistic Studies are an edition of the Rose Etudes used in virtually
every college clarinet studio. There etudes are full of errors; David Hite
found most of them but made a few of his own in the process. And I hate
most of the phrase markings he has added.

Hope this helps. Were in Texas are you? With whom are you studying?

Sincerely,
Andre Canabou, 2nd Clarinetist Boise Philharmonic
