What I think you are saying is that his Eingang was not
consistent with a Mozartean Eingang. That's a slap on the wrist,
with a "don't do that again" statement. To play an Eingang that
transitions into a Cadenza is a life sentence on bread and water.
The matter of improvised or not improvised is not really a
serious issue, though I'd love to see the practice reinstated.

It is, instead, a matter of content; i.e., a square peg in a
round hole.

I don't think he played an eingang plus a cadenza, I should have
been
clearer (and yes I know the difference, learned from you!).

He played what I would describe as a cadenza-like eingang, not
merely a
brief transition from dominant to tonic. It was one or two
minutes of
cadenza-like stuff, so you could call it a very, very, very
over-elaborate
eingang I suppose, in that he went from dominant to tonic
eventually. I have
no idea whether he did it on the spot or had it prepared. I
thought the
style jarred.
