Have you checked whether the end of the reed and the end of the mouthpiece
match? I have a C* under 20 years old and have a real problem with the lower
register in general. The C* has a rounded tip -- the reeds are flatter at
the tip and are not matching the mouthpiece. This could be the problem and I'd
check it out. I have an old Holton sax (ca. 1914-1920) that has been
reconditioned. It is a beautiful horn with so much silver weight it really is
tiring to play. Extra keys, everything you'd want or could get on a newer horn.
The sound is wonderful, but everything below F is unwieldy. Think it's the
mouthpiece! Good luck!
