This aria is a perfect example of the kinds of ornamentation and
improvisation that were possible and available to performers.
The only fault with it, is that it is prepared, rather than
spontaneous. For a singer to do this twice the same way would
have resulted in a riot. The audience expected singers to be
infinitely inventive.

As you listen, see if you can figure out what the specific
improvisatory elements are. Note how the singer almost never
goes to the final note of a phrase directly. That last note is
invariably preceded by a leading note that produces a small
dissonance.
