No, this is not so. Even in the late eighteenth century, our Founding
Fathers realized that the relative populations of cities would eventually be
able to carry the weight in a strictly popular vote. The Electoral College
is a wonderful mechanism to preserve the influence of individual states, and
to dilute the effect of large urban centers, which themselves are a special
interest.
Absent the electoral college a candidate could win the presidency by taking
a dozen of our largest cities and their surrounding areas; not a prospect
that promotes a candidate having appeal to a diverse group of urban,
suburban and rural voters.
