Bernard Herrmann's clarinet quintet was written in January 1967
and recorded at St Giles, Cripplegate, London in 1974 by the
clarinettist Robert Hill. BH (1911-1975) lived the last ten years
of his live in Britain, but returned to LA to record the music for
the film Taxi Driver, and died there in his sleep shortly after the
last recording session. The programmatic associations of the
three movements of 'Souvenirs de voyage' are:
M1: Andante Pastorale - Allegro
A. E. Housmann (1859-1936) A Shropshire Lad (1896)
M2: Berceuse
The Aran Islands in J. M. Synge (1871-1909) Riders to the Sea (1904)
M3: Andante tranquillo quasi barcarolla
Venetian gondolas inspired by Turner's paintings
