DAY 3

Sunday, the third and last day started with the last rehearsal of the clarinet choir. It could have been longer but there was more program to get through so we stopped at 10.

Then Linda Langeheine presented her discoveries on Mental Rehearsal in a very enthousiastic and entertaining manner.

At 11 PM, Matthias Mueller (Zurich) presented his method for advanced clarinetists which I had already heard at the clarinet day in Winterthur only two weeks earlier (see my report) so I again visited the displays and grabbed a quick coffee.

I was back in time at 12 noon to hear Rudolf Mauz (who's beginners method I sometimes use) discuss the teaching situation in Germany and in Baden-Wuertemberg in particular and give some tips on group lessons.

The last lecture was at 1 PM with Matthias Hoefer (Frankfurt) on bass clarinet playing techniques (more for beginners) which was overfilled and very well recieved.

The day and the symposium drew to a close with the final concert of the clarinet choirs of the German Clarinet Society and Holz, Japan. The Germans started with pieces by Tchaikovsky and Mozart. Then Holz played a wonderful half a concert with pieces by Bach, Strauss (Rosen aus dem Sueden) and Weber. Then both choirs joined for the final piece, "Introduktion und Passacaglia" by Joseph Rheinberger. We were 57 clarinets on stage - more than were in the audience, I'm afraid.

Many good byes and wishing to see each other next time or in Meiningen. As I drove away from the symposium (by now, I had found a free parking spot very near the building) feeling very satisfied, heading for the freeway but still only maybe one minute's walk from the Conservatorium, I passed a very unusual building which looked like a mosque but, in fact, was a restaurant with a good view of Dresden ...
