Dear Fellow List members,
Curtis Bennett asks whether there is actually music written for Ab =
clarinet.
The answer is "yes" although not much.
Terje Lerstad wrote Hommage =E0 Stravinsky in 3 movements for =
unaccompanied Ab and very virtuoso it is too.
There is also the following piece:
Hoemsnes, Bj=F8rn: Patchwork for Ab picc/Ccl with tape delay and 2 =
percussion which was recorded on Aurora, 1988, NCD-B 4952 (originally =
released Phillips, 411080-1)

Apart from that it has been used in Jazz (by Peter van Bergen - free =
Jazz and by Vinny Golia in his The Clarinets CD from the series Music =
for Like instruments), avant-garde music by Hans-Joachim Hespos and =
others, in a recording on Clarinet Classics by The Clarinet Section =
(clarinet sextet), and in a handful of classical scores including Bartok =
and Tavener.
=20
Also a correction to Danyel. The Ab is definitely a separate instrument =
from the high G as may be seen from 19-century makers' and sales =
catalogues.

I hope that colleagues find this helpful.
=20
Of course, it is not as high as the A and Bb octave clarinets which did =
(and some surviving specimens do) exist and the unique high C octave =
clarinet auctioned on eBay and discussed non this list 2 or 3 years ago.
