I have tried several, by Orsi and by Schwenk and Seggelke
(http://www.schwenk-und-seggelke.de/englisch/frame.html) and one of unknown
Italian origin. Like with the Eb it all depends on mouthpiece and reed. If
people would spend a fraction of the time they spend on selecting a good
mouthpiece and preparing a good reed for the A/Bb on the smaller clarinets,
it would not be as much of a problem. There are various people in Vienna who
play the "picksuesse hoelzl" in historic Schrammeln-bands and it sounds very
sweet and quite effortless. cf. www.philharmoniaschrammeln.at
The Ab was actually a G at high pitch.

Best wishes,
danyel
