I have played around with Lilypond and have found it to be chock full
of features and capable of producing beautiful scores. However, it is
not what you'd call user friendly. There have been several attempts
at making front ends for Lilypond (the one that comes to mind is
MusicTex) but they are not interactive in the way Finale or Sibelius
are. Since lilypond really only takes data and compiles it into a
score, I'm not sure if this environment is convenient for score
playback, live experimentation, etc.
