It's true, although Lilypond (not GUI-based, but quite usable for many
things) has many attractive features and seems to have come on a great
deal over the last few years.
I was exceptionally impressed when, as an experiment, I entered a 7/10
time signature and it not only accepted it (while generating a warning
that it was nonstandard), but understood its logical and musical meaning.
This is a project well worth supporting, since it represents an attempt
to find a truly effective open and logical standard for encoding musical
notation on a computer. I see this as a prerequisite for a truly
effective GUI.
