Kimberly Paternoster asked:
<<<I have a Buffet S1 A clarinet that I'm going to sell. I purchased it from
Pasquale Cardillo, my teacher at the time, and he played the horn in the BSO
for a few years. It's a beautiful horn, but I don't see me ever playing in
an orchestra again, so it's a shame to let it just sit in my closet and not
be used.
How much would this horn sell for? I am so far out of the loop on these
things now, I have no clue where to begin.>>>
The S-1 was popular in the late 1970's. At least here in Seattle, it was
the hot horn to have. Bill McColl at the University of Washington had
Buffet make a pair of them in boxwood; all of his students salivated
mightily, as they were pretty indeed.
As far as we could tell, it was an R-13 with the register vent moved towards
the mouthpiece a few millimeters, making the 12ths better (but stuffing up
the throat Bb - the inevitable tradeoff). Buffet has done this since on a
number of their instruments.
If Pasquale Cardillo played it in the BSO, it's likely a pretty good horn.
Value? Check Ebay. Should be as much as a similar vintage R-13, plus a few
added bucks because of its professional heritage. (This doesn't make it a
better instrument - but some folks will pay more, so collect it).
If it's pretty and the case is in good shape, I'd think you should get at
least $1,000 for it, perhaps more. That's a SWAG, of course.
Best of luck,
kjf
