Look at the bass line near the end of the composition and you
will see that, for some cockeyed reason, Mozart starts writing in
a major. And then, a few measures later the manuscript breaks
off.

What this says is that Mozart decided right then and there to
write it for a clarinet in A and it served no useful purpose for
him to continue that manuscript which had a lot of stuff (the
bass line for example) that was useless. I may have said m. 91
in an earlier message but I don't really remember which measure.
Start hunting. It is good for your soul. It is there. Find it.

Dan,
You wrote, "and which turned into the clarinet
concerto at measure 91 I think when Mozart changes the
key from G to A major just before the manuscript
breaks off."

Of course I know of this fragment for G Basset Horn,
and I believe I've heard you and others say that but
for the key it is similar if not identical(?) to K.622
up to the point it breaks off. What happens precisely
that makes you say what you did?

PS I've bicycled through Winterthur. Thanks, David
for the report!
