Yes, I agree with you. I think of it (and I like to think Spohr did too) as
being scored for wind trio (cl, 2hns); string trio (vn, 2vas); plus 'cello
and double bass.
Spohr was innovative in his scoring, and not only in this piece -- think of
the double string quartets.
Here's a little teaser for clarinet players: what is the scoring of the
second movement of the first clarinet concerto?-)
