Subj: [kl] Air leak
Date: Fri, 08 Sep 2006 09:07:00 -0400

I did my dissertation on the air leak because when I had "the leak"
(late 70's) it seemed that no one I talked with knew anything about it.
I decided to do a case study and talked with people who answered my
letter in the Clarinet and surgeons and a bag pipe player that head
about my study. =20
Now the list is a quick and easy way to get and share information about
this problem.=20
There are several situations that cause the leak. I found are fatigue,
is the most common. Making changes in our set-up, like stiffer reed or
different mouthpiece, with out a transition period can also cause
fatigue and "the leak". The Pressure of getting ready for a recital
(tension, fatique) also is common. The palate is a muscle and muscles
can get tired and strained but also trained. So having the leak need
not be "terminal". =20
Nerves tighten muscles and make them tire easier, so tension is an enemy
too.
Breathing can also be part of the equation. Good support from low in the
body will one get back to normal. =20

There is an article that appeared in the Clarinet Magazine May-June
1998, vol 25, #3 pages 30-32 can also be of help.=20
I still receive an occasional contact from people who have read the
article. I hope it helps.
