Thanks Wayne, for bringing this up. IT IS common advice. It is also
bullshit! The standard range for the bass clarinet goes up to the altissimo G.
Composers write it all the time (maybe not in the easier band pieces). You simply
cannot play the upper clarion, let alone the altissimo, with a super soft
reed, It is this kind of thinking that has crippled bass clarinet playing for
generations.
