And also, Curtis,
One person on bulletin board thread I just mentioned
suggested to that bass-beginner to use a really soft
reed in the beginning. I think this is common advice.
However Walter Grabner suggested to me (and to
everyone that reads that great page he referred you
to) to use the same strength reed you are accustomed
to on the soprano clarinet (assuming you have an
appropriate mouthpiece). This advice has helped me on
bass and on contrabass, though my bass reeds are still
about 1/2 strenth less than my soprano.

And I'll add another idea that has worked for me. I
used artificial reeds in the beginning (Legere). The
consistency helped me when my embouchure wasn't used
to the new instrument. I found that even minor
changes in cane reeds would throw me; now that I have
more experience reeds are no more problem than they
ever have been.
