Subj: [kl] Bass Clarinet for beginners?
Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2006 14:52:30 -0400

So, this weekend I'll be starting in a wind ensemble. I had played in
this group prior to moving out of state. I've since moved back to this
area (Kansas City), and I approached this group (which meets in the
Fall) and inquired about re-joining. They told me that they would be
happy to have me come back - on Bass. They lack a bass clarinetist,
and would prefer a bass clarinetist over say, an Eb clarinetist.

Problem is, I've never played Bass clarinet. I played regular Bb and
Eb (as needed), but never Bass. They said it wasn't a problem, since I
could borrow one that they have available (a school horn, I guess).
I've no idea of the quality of said instrument, but I assume it's ok.
I'll need to pick up some reeds this weekend.

But I have to ask the esteemed members of this list. What should I
expect? I'm assuming the fingerings are the same, or is that a gross
assumption on my part? I'm fully prepared to have to adjust my
embouchure. Anyone have any Bass clarinet tips for beginners?
