That's because so many oboe players now play the tuning pitch by putting a
tuner on their stands and lipping the A they produce to make the needle on
the tuner show A=(whatever the conductor thinks he/she wants). But they
don't seem actually to adjust their reeds to play comfortably or naturally
at that pitch - so as soon as they stop lipping down their pitch goes up
where the reed actually wants to be. I know, it's not a clarinet topic
exactly, but I don't understand why even some very good players in the
Philadelphia area do this.
