Sad news for the folks in the back row - Maynard Ferguson passed away this
week, at the age of 78. I saw him at Jazz Alley in Seattle just a couple of
months ago. He looked somewhat ill, but played strong; he put on a great
show.

While many folks don't like his bravura style, it would be difficult to find
a musician with a greater influence on how their instrument is played.

In a 1975 interview in The Instrumentalist, Bud Herseth described MF as "the
greatest brass player of the 20th Century." I don't have the credibility to
argue with that opinion.
