I'm way too practical -- doesn't anyone think about the tax deductibility
and plan ahead for some major purchases every year or two? I'd think the $650
for an obviously high end mouthpiece isn't too much to pay. I, too, know
about a friend's research & development of two music products (not mouthpieces).
So far he's sunk six figures (at least $100,000) into his work. Production
is not far behind . . . and the price is not going to be low because one
product is "exquisite" and the other has no comparable product on the market.
Will he recover the money spent? At some point in the future . . . probably,
but that will take a while. He's doing it because he sees a unique need that
should be filled.

As has been said here before, if you think it's too much to pay $650 for a
mouthpiece, don't buy it! (And don't fuss about it, either.)
