Rien, I can't fathom your meaning. Perhaps you could give an example of a

Dear Noel

of course the feelings one experiences when listening to music are very
personal: what one considers to be "a beautiful, dark-brown voice" to
someone else is just a nice voice, or maybe not even nice at all. Dan Leeson
on this list often has commented on such subjective, but rather undefined
descriptions.

Yet I'll try to describe the expressions I used.

When I listen to Bartok's concerto for orchestra, or when I listen to music
written by Hindemith (and also some other composers) I have a feeling of
abstraction inherent to this music. This abstraction gives me a feeling of
"coldness", but it is the feeling of coldness comparable to diving into a
cool pool on a hot day. The music is wonderfully cool. Messiaen has this
effect even stronger on me.

The music written by Copland also often gives me this feeling of
abstraction, this feeling of chillness, but it is not a wonderful chillness,
it is rather like a cold shower after a soccer play on a cold day: it
removes sweat, dirt and maybe tiredness, but it is not agreeable.

Maybe this helps?

Rien
