I think it is a simple matter of "bang for the buck".
If you really think the $650 mouthpiece is worth it
then go ahead and buy it. If not, don't. The best
mouthpiece I ever played (my main mouthpiece) is
pretty expensive, about $400 when bought seperately.
It actually came with my clarinet, and was impossible
to buy the clarinet without it saving the price of the
mouthpiece.

One time, just out of interest, I contacted some of my
favorite clarinet players to ask what mouthpieces they
used. They all used Vandoren on Bb clarinet and Selmer
on bass clarinet. Especially two of them use the exact
same model Selmer bass clarinet mouthpiece, and the
same model Selmer bass clarinet, and there are no two
players that sound more different!
