I suspect you'd need to be in a job like Morales's position in Philadelphia
for the qualities that make the mouthpiece worth $650, whatever they may be
when compared to the work of other custom makers, to be necessary. In fact,
I don't know for a fact what Morales is playing on these days, whether one
of the Backun mouthpieces or whatever he was already using, but I suspect he
didn't pay $600+ for it either.

Ricardo is playing on the Backun Mouthpiece exclusively. I'll have to ask
him next time we hang out which one it is as I don't recall right now (it's
not the Backun model that I play).
He loves the way the mouthpiece(s) plays - it's unlike anything he has
played on before. Ricardo has always paid full price for the Backun products
that he has (and man o man does he have a LOT). No idea if that's the case
with the Morales/Backun line or not, but do know that before he was paying
full price for his equipment as Morrie told me a few years ago.
A tenor sax student of mine got over $1300 on EBAY on a mouthpiece that he
bought about 10 years ago for $500.
really - I shook my head in disbelief till I saw the auction results and
yes, he got paid too.
