We flew home Monday from ATL to SNA (John Wayne in Orange Co., CA, for those
of you who don't memorize airport codes, like I do.). Security in Atlanta
was tight, but we moved through the process very quickly. I had cork grease
in the case, and it caused no alarm. Since chap stick, lip stick, etc, are
allowed now, cork grease falls into the same catagory. They did use the
white bomb sniffing pads on my laptop and camera, though. I had only my
clarinet in a bag, the laptop and my camera as carry-on, and made sure my
wife had NO water, or other liquids on here. She likes to see what she can
sneak past security, without telling me. Grrr!! Once some fruit, found by a
fruit sniffing beagle, caused us to go through an agriculture search.
Needless to say, I was not a happy clarinetist!

The ClarinetFest was a good one, for those who missed it. Very well
organized, with some great events, including the US Army Field Band, and the
Atlata SO night. If you haven't heard Andy Firth play, you've missed
something special. Laura Alden, principal with the ASO, beautifully
performed the Berio arrangement of the Brahms Fm Sonata. She was able to
keep the clarinet heard over the rather thick orchestration.

Ricardo Morales played the Weber Quintet with a rather good quartet, and
turned it into a masterpiece, which it really isn't, IMHO. His playing, if
possible has improved since I last heard him. Larry Combs and Alessandro
Carbonare were also outstanding, plus many more artists and ensembles.

I'm looking forward to some cooler weather next year in Vancouver. Hotlanta
was, at time, really unbearable. We spent most of the time just inside the
CNN Omni, which is a great hotel.
