He is (or should be) an inspiriation to all clarinet players. It
diminishes his artistry to suggest that he has inspired the
African-American clarinet community.

Antoine, I feel certain that your intent was to speak of his
inspiring ability and you are correct in doing so. I thank you
and congratulate you for your thoughtfulness. But I remember as a
kid growing up how the great fighter Joe Louis was always spoken
of as being a credit to his race (as were many African
Americans). But underneath the apparent compliment was an
indication of the then very divided American scene, a sort of
sideways swipe at Louis. What was intended as a compliment was,
in fact, a statement that reminded us of the the two separate
worlds. He was a credit to the human race for his dignity and
competence in his chosen field, while retaining his humanity. It
perpetuates the "us" and "them" world to focus on something so
unimportant as race (whatever that is) being in any way related
to the significance of his contribution.

I first became acquainted with Anthony while he was playing with
the
Cincinnati Symphony. His sense of musicality is amazing and
passionate. I
will hear him play the Mozart Quintet in Cincinnati sometime in
Sept of this
year. It is really weird having a friend that is so genius in his
craft. He
has really inspired the African-American clarinet community.
