Hello Richard

If you notice the notes D and Eb use the bottom bigger
register tube, but the E uses the register hole on the
neck. The solution I did only affects the notes from E
and up, becuase it is only the neck register tube that
I replaced. Persoanlly, I don't have any problems with
the notes that use the lower register hole, like D and
Eb. They are very easy to play on my Buffet bass
clarinet. The bigger hole did improve the E note a
lot. I could not play legato from low notes (from
about 2 finger E and lower) to E, F, F#, G, G#, A, and
Bb. Now I can do that pretty easily.

But, you need to seperate 2 problems. if you have
problems playing those notes staccato this will not
improve it. I could play them staccato (i.e. start the
note, with either tongue or air) before the change.
This only helped with the legato big intervals I
described, which was my only problem.
Making the hole even bigger (4mm or more) makes
altisimo harder to play, so I use a 3.5mm hole (the
original hole is 3mm).

In my country there is no one that will be able to do
something like this. I really wouldn't trust my bass
clarinet with anyone here. I had a friend from England
who is an engineer and ameture woodwind player making
these changable tubes for me (it was actually his
idea). I don't know if you have good repairers in your
country so I can't really help. If you know a repairer
that has a "metal shop" (i.e. he can make metal parts
accurately on the lathe) then he might be able to do
this. But imho only do it if it is someone you
completely trust.

Hope that helps.
