Well, I had purchased a decent R-13 off of e-Bay a couple of years back, but
was not extremely happy with it. It was decent, but not as good as the
1971-vintage horn I played when I was in high school.

My daughter had progressed to the point where she needed a better instrument
than her mom's Evette-Schaeffer Master Model (vintage 1969), so I tracked down
the fellow I had sold the old R-13 to, back in 1978. He still had it, though
he was not playing it much. He agreed to trade horn-for-horn for my newer
model. He lives in Cincinnati, and I live in Detroit. The week before
Christmas last year, he drove up here and we exchanged horns. I bought him a
dinner for him and his sons, and gave him a small gift for his troubles. He
also received my most profound thanks. (of course, I still remembered the old
serial number, so this was the first thing I checked, along with the condition
of the instrument). He said he would not have sold it to anyone else, but
considering I was getting it for my daughter, he decided to make the deal.

Anyway, the R-13 was the final gift that we gave to my daughter when we were
opening presents on Christmas. She had no idea what was in the gift bag, and
was amazed shen she opened it up...even more so when she found out it was my
old horn! the look on her face was worth any trouble I would heve had to go
through to get it back.

Now, I play the old Evette, and will be saving up to get a new Buffet in the future.
