I have received a few private emails regarding a couple of posts a year
ago when I was looking for a new basset clarinet in A for use in soloing
with our university orchestra on the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. I
thought I would share the experiences with the horn.

I ended up purchasing a Buffet Basset Clarinet. I purchased it from
Muncy Winds - and they did a marvelous job of setting it up and getting
it to me. I ended up having Bill and Linda Brannen set up the
instrument for me - and they did a bang-up job - terrific in every way.
Just a great instrument.

My thoughts about the horn:

Buffet needs to add some extra lower keys. Did you know that you can't
play a Db major scale on the low end on this instrument? There is no
possible way to move between some notes because of limited cross
fingerings. And you can't slide UP from a low Gb to an Ab.

Beyond that, the instrument was flawless in every way. Pitch was a bit
high - even though the barrel that came with the horn was GREAT! I
purchased several barrels from Maury Backun 65, 66, and 67 mm - ended up
using the 66, although I really enjoy the 67 on my Bb. I don't know why
the longer barrel doesn't play lower than my 66 Chadash (which I've
given up on) - but needless to say, they are fantastic barrels. If you
haven't tried them - the new Morales taper is just great! My only
problem is the price - but one can't be too picky when it comes to
things like $ ; )

The Mozart went very well - only one memory slip and I missed a low note
fingering at the beginning of the developement - but otherwise it went
great.

Hope all is well with everyone and that you are all looking forward to a
great season, school year......whatever.

Best,
Roger Garrett
