Well that is exactly the point. No one can really describe the
process by which an instrument wears out, and some (me very much
among them) say that the phenomenon does not exist. It has been
hashed out on this list for years. You can spend a week reading
about it by looking under the search terms "blow out" or
"instruments wearing out."

But basically the argument is something like the following:
constant use of a wooden instrument will result in its physical
deterioration voer time, that time varying. The cause may be
swabbing, vibration, or any of a number of other reasons. But
whatever the reason, the process happens and the instrument wears
out.

The argument against the assertion is that there is no evidence
to support that view. Wooden instruments are used by many
players for years and years and years.

We are not going to solve it here, but you should be aware that
some say this is a technical truth while others say it is a
grandmother's tale.

Can you tell me how it is that oboes "wear out?" I've been
trying to get my
local oboe professional to tell me why he replaces his horn every
two to
three years - and all I can get is that it keeps his students in
good oboes.

Also, please remember that oboes wear out much faster than
clarinets.
Professional oboe players are constantly replacing their
instruments.
