All that is required is that the instruments be properly
maintained by a qualified repairperson.

There is a story the a very fine oboeist in Los Angeles believes
that he has to replace his instrument every year. I had a C
clarinet made by Buffet in 1885 and sold it to David Niethamer
about 10 years ago. I believe he still has it and it plays very
well. It has problems to be sure, but it had those problems in
1885.

Why is it you never hear about bass clarinets and bassoons
becoming unplayable over time? I think it is because they are so
expensive that no one in their right mind would consider
replacing one based on an old wive's tale.

This reminds me of a conversation that I had with a repairman
recently (this
will open a can of worms!). Just how many years will a clarinet
last if
played on a regular basis (2 hours daily)? I have a collegue
that has been
playing his set of R13's since 1956 for many hours each day.
They look
terrible, but, he sounds amazing!

Also, please remember that oboes wear out much faster than
clarinets.
Professional oboe players are constantly replacing their
instruments.
