Try buying a fine flute head joint (mouthpiece) for the cost of an equally
fine clarinet mouthpiece. One could buy many fine clarinet mouthpieces for
the cost of *one* fine flute headjoint. The cost of a reedmaking kit of
quality for double reeds is as expensive, or more so, than one clarinet
mouthpiece, depending on what mouthpiece you choose. And don't think we
are the only ones who play multiples. There are multiples for flutes,
double reeds, saxes, brasses and percussion. I own and currently play a
full set of flutes and two spare C flutes, 3 triple sets, two single Bb
clarinets and an alto (no bass and lower), oboe/English horn, a bassoon,
soprano, alto and tenor saxes, Bb and C trumpets, trombone, violin and
viola, and piano. And I do play them all. There is no "cheap" instrument
to play, but clarinet certainly is at the bottom of the list when comparing
costs. No more whining!! :?)))
