At the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) two players are used, both
doubling basset horn. I did not notice if C clarinets came out to play.

I was appalled to see at the English National Opera that no basset horns
were used at all! An especially sad sight, as otherwise their
performance was well worth seeing, and overall still is.

Magic Flute calls for pairs of Bb and C clarinets and
Basset Horns in F.

When I played it, the clarinets doubled basset horn.
That, of course, was an amateur production.

Is it usual in pro productions to have basset horn
"specialists" in addition to the soprano clarinet
players? I seem to recall (though I may be mistaken)
that the Met Opera production only had two
clarinetists - presumably, Jim Ognibene played soprano
& basset horn. But again, I may be wrong.

By the way, clarinets and Basset Horns don't play in
the same scenes. Basset horn is called for at the end
of Scene 8 (1st Act Finale); Scene 9 (Marsch der
Priester); and Scene 10 (Arie mit Chor).

C clarinet parts are easily played transposed on Bb
clarinet.
