I too think altos are really nice for jazz. You get the low notes that have
the bass clarinet tonal quality and then the middle register that - at least
on my cheap old thing - has a more sax-like feel than a soprano clarinet can
get, and then onwards and upwards it's surprising how easy it is to reach
the top of the altissimo range (although I do sometimes find myself there
when I didn't mean to be....)

Then there's the fact that you can stand and play it, which - at least for
me - often permits a more physical relationship to the rhythm than I get
when I'm sitting down.

Hello everyone. I am fascinated with the a. clarinet mthpc. thread. I had no
idea there were so many of you interested in what I had long considered a
dinosaur. But please read on, I do not mean to insult. You have excited
interest in me. I have access to a couple Leblanc wood altos, probably from
the 60s. What do you all think of this instrument?
I *may* fix it up and give it a toot. Do altos sound good playing jazz?
Thanks for the insight in advance.
