With respect to those on the list who differ, after 35 years of teaching
I feel that it is counterproductive to start someone on regular clarinet
whose fingers cannot yet cover the tone holes. First experiences with
music should not be associated with frustration over having to wait for
hands to grow.

My "starter" instrument of choice for a would-be clarinetist in this
situation is the recorder, a legitimate instrument that provides for a
satisfying introduction to music study and an excellent foundation for
further studies of any woodwind.

Failing that, the kinder-clari or the Lyons would be great choices
(though I've found parents reluctant to spend money on something other
than the genuine article.) My issue with the Lyons, at least when I
tried it fifteen-something years ago at a trade show, is that it has a
very unattractive sound. Jack Brymer was trying it at the same time and
he sounded no better on it than I did. Maybe the instrument has been
improved over the years.
