It's not just the size of the clarinet, but the weight as well. An
instrument too heavy for a child to hold is poor ergonomics for the thumb
and leads to poor hand position, particularly resting the Bb trill key on
the side of the R 1st finger. So, I recommend the student model Amati for
young players. It's not the best clarinet in the world, but it is slightly
smaller, much lighter and alot easier for a child to manage. The Bb model
will allow the child to play in the school band. Amati rarely play well out
of the box, but do just fine after a tech check. I also recommend the
Neotek clar neck strap to facilitate hand and mouth position. Every
beginner deserves the best set-up that will meet their individual needs.
