I have a six year old student who plays the Kinder Klar designed by my teac=
her John Denman. he is doing great. First because the clarinet is the right=
size and the mouthpiece is not the standard eb killer. His parents are ver=
y involved and he is highly motivated. he played my last recital and did a =
great job. We go slow but he is already over the register cross and can pla=
y many song and scales from memory. He also has played violin since he was =
four. And yes he can read music. It depends on the situation and the studen=
t. the parents need to be involved as at the young age they will need to su=
pervise practice sessions. At first they need to be short 15-20 min. and mo=
re importantly every day. The point is to not make musicians out of every s=
tudent but to help there development and to realize that there is a bigger =
world out there.=20
