Oliver, I seem to be the only one who isn't cheering the girl (or her
father) on with 100% enthusiasm, but let me clarify. I have taught
clarinet to 8 year-olds, so I am not suggesting it can't be done
successfully. For me the red flag is that she already plays an
instrument, one that as it happens is designed to be accessible to very
small children. Suzuki teachers teach children as young as 2 and 3 years
old because string instruments are built in small sizes to accommodate
them. My point is that a lot depends on why the switch is being
attempted at this time. Does the girl no longer want to play cello? Is
Dad merely trying to save rental money because he already owns a
clarinet, maybe one he played as a kid? With no other background,
clarinet is do-able, and I agree with Sarah that the younger a child
can be started on music study, the better. I simply suggest the
possibility that she could learn more music on a cello and that staying
with it and switching later may be in her better musical interest.
Again, the father's interest in switching now and the girl's feelings
toward the cello are, I think, important ingredients in the decision.
