IMHO, the simplest solution is for her to continue with cello until her
hands are big enough to cover the clarinet keys. Then switch her if he
really "wants" her to play clarinet (what, one may wonder, is his reason
for wanting this?). Any other solutions - of which there are several
when dealing with a "small 8 year-old" - are, again IMHO, only ways of
temporizing while waiting for the child to grow. Until this student can
cover the holes comfortably (assuming she can't now), she will be
limited mostly to left hand notes and will not progress nearly as
quickly on clarinet as she will on a 1/4 or 1/2 size cello.
