Mozart began creating catalog of his own music in 1784. The first
entry is the piano concerto, K. 449, which was first performed on
the night of Mar. 23, 1784, the same night that Stadler had his
performance of K. 361.

Each catalog entry contained a brief incipit of the music that
was represented by that entry. The music for the quintet, K. 581
was entered when he indicated completion of the piece. Same for
the incipit when he finished K. 622. In the case of the quintet,
that is the only excerpt we have that can prove Mozart's
authorship of the work. In the case of the concerto, there is
the Winterthur fragment but that was for a different instrument.

So to answer your question, both incipits were take from the
Mozart catalog of his own works. And they really are examples of
his hand.

The matter of the Gran Partitta is involved with the catalog's
beginnning, because it is often argued (incorrectly, I should
suggest) that if he had written the work when I suggest he did,
it would appear in the catalog with an incipit. Since it does
not, it is argued that it could have been written (or concluded)
in March of 1784. That is an argument that I have faced on
several occasions.

I hope you liked the book.

Dan,
On the cover of your book, "The Mozart Forgeries",
what is the source of the 4 measures each of the
Concerto and the Quintet?

Your note this morning about paper reminded me of your
book, and upon rereading some sections, I believe I
will enjoy it even more the next time I read it.

Thanks,
Wayne Thompson
