Subj: [kl] New Piece for Bass Clarinet and Piano
Date: Fri, 09 Jun 2006 14:14:02 -0400

Many of you know that I am an admirer of the music of composer Donald
Draganski. Don is a fine composer, an excellent bassoonist, and a good friend. He
composes for all instruments and ensembles, but I personally have focused on
his music for woodwinds. As a bassoonist, he has a keen ear for woodwind tone
colors.

It has been a pleasure making his clarinet oriented compositions available
on my website. Many of you have enjoyed his music including "Klezmer Music for
Woodwind Quintet" and "Trio from Rio, for Flute, Clarinet, and Piano."

Over the past few years, I have amiably nagged Don to write something for me
to play on bass clarinet.

This spring he finally obliged me, and came up with a delightful piece.

The piece is entitled "Fantasy on Four, for Bass Clarinet in Bb and Piano
(2006)." It is modern, but approachable, with some interesting melodic and
rhythmic elements. It is based on a sequence of four chords, which are derived
from the 12 notes of the chromatic scale and treated serially, with a bass line
forming a whole tone scale. Nevertheless, it is rhythmic and tuneful with
several enjoyable themes, and unashamedly tonal.

I will be premiering this piece, as part of my all bass clarinet recital, at
the University of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium on Friday, June 16.

This piece will be available for sale at the Symposium, and from my website
after June 19.
