I also have a N H White Silver King, and 'Silver King' is written on the
bell - does yours say that on the bell? Mine actually also has NP engraved
on it, but in spite of that I'm convinced it is silver plated. It was very
discoloured (black rather than brown) when I got it, but it responded to
gentle (and not so gentle) polishing with a jeweller's cloth. It has that
silver look rather than the Nickel plated look and it tarnishes quite
quickly, as silver would.

You might try Eberhard Kraut (see link below) - if you can find his email

Silver tends to tarnish a black or dark grayish color. Nickel tends to
tarnish brown. Silver tarnishes quite rapidly. Nickel tarnishes slowly.
