Dear Bob,

The problem is inadequate venting of the thumb hole, under the thumb
key w/pad. The problem could be that the thumb pad and key don't open
far enough and/or there are burrs at the bottom of the thumb tone
hole from the boring of the bore which is done after the tone holes
are drilled through the walls to the inside and bore.

Since opening the thumb plate key and pad more will also cause a
greater amount of opening for the little pad under the "A" key
spatula area (they work together and must close together in consort
when fingering from open "G" to first space "F") the open G will also
rise in pitch.

If the plateau version of the 7214 is in other regards like the non-
plateau #7214, and I would assume it would be, then the top of the
top joint will be approximately 2 mm too short for good A=440 tuning
when played by an advanced player. Pulling that 2mm to return the
instrument to a correct length is a very bad thing to do UNLESS 2 MM
WORTH OF TUNING RINGS ARE ALSO USED TO FILL IN THE GAP IN THE BORE
AND ELIMINATE THE TURBULANCE AND DISPLACEMENT SUCH A PULL CREATES.

Before doing anything, I would take the keys off, put a drop light in
the bore and check for burrs around the bottom edges of the tone
holes. I'm not sure if a similar metal tube, but possibly not
standing quite so tall above the body exterior, is used. This might
require some grinding. I wouldn't recommend you do this unless you
know a lot about making tone hole adjustments.

If just raising the key travel of the thumb pad and the "G" pad
(under the touch portion of the "A" key) is all that is needed, then
going to thinner corks, or even grinding the underside of the arm of
the thumb key that activates the top ring key might be needed.

If you don't feel comfortable about doing these things, take it to a
HIGH GRADE woodwind repairman.
