Just as a matter of interest, I did this for two reasons:

1. Some e-mail programs will not allow live links in messages, interpreting
them as potentially dangerous. Therefore, I wrote it so it would not produce
a live link and be deleted or otherwise interfered with by e-mail software.

2. All the browsers that I'm aware of let you type in the URL alone, without
the http://. Therefore, typing "users.adelphia.net/~bmcgar" in the address
field will take you directly to the page, just as if you'd included
"http://".

I express Web sites this way as a matter of course in my work as an
information developer. This has become fairly standard practice, but I
apologize for the confusion.
