Recently, I purchased an A clarinet. I walked into the store fully
intending to get a Yamaha, since they were about $1,000 cheaper and I'd
heard good things about them. I tried both the Yamaha and Buffet, as well
as Selmer professional instruments the store had in stock. To me, there was
a huge difference between the Yamaha and the Buffet and after hearing the
tone quality of the Buffet instrument I knew I couldn't walk out of that
store with a Yamaha. I felt I would NEVER be happy with that instrument.
All the instruments I tried were professional instruments-wouldn't purchase
anything less than that. Just wanted to relay my experience. I know we're
talking about two different clarinets here, since mine was an "A" clarinet
but there was simply no debate in my mind about which instrument had a far
better tone quality, better projection and intonation. I tried several
different mouthpieces on that Yamaha clarinet with the same results every
time-it was NOT for me. I will say that my Bb and Eb clarinets are Buffets
also so perhaps I'm simply used to the sound of that brand but I could not
make that Yamaha produce a sound that even came close to matching the tone
that Buffet A clarinet had. Christy
