which prompted this further thought:
I have found that some of the best practice I can do immediately prior to a
performance (during warm up time) is to make sure that the last thing I put
into my head is correct. By this I mean NOT to keep on practising in the
hope that something will magically fall into place. You've already done the
hard yards. I mean to very slowly go over the notes and rhythms in question
and be absolutely correct with every detail. What this does is make the
most recent input into the brain correct, and increase the chances of
correct output from the brain in performance. Resist the temptation to play
at correct speed at this time.
