The remarks below by Ann Satterfield, are intelligent,
thoughtful, well and clearly expressed, and indicitive of a very
imaginative mind. I salute you Ann.

Gillian,

Premiere Rhapsody is such wonderful music!! Debussy calls for
flowing lines, abrupt changes of mood, reflective thoughts, darts
of action-- light on water, goldfish in a pond. Or in a word,
rhapsodic...

In addition to the excellent advice already posted, I would like
to add a couple of ideas.

Can you sing the intervals accurately? (Slow motion is OK.) I
find a lot of my 'technical' problems are not-hearing-clearly
problems.

Then the physical solution is calm, slow, accurate, *varied*
practice. Make many different rhythms and groupings. Set
metronome at tempo speed, but do most of practice at quarter and
half speed variations.
Variations of triple meter or triplets are especially good, seems
to be both reassuring & accurate. (can turn 1 e & a (4 16ths)
into 1& 2 3, 1 2& 3, 1 2 3& or 1-trip-let 2, and 1 2-trip-let.)

There are probably just a few intervals that are out of sync,
give those most attention.

Play especially tricky portions passage backwards and forwards.

With this kind of attitude and practice, the first time you play
the passage is more likely to be right, and a missed note or two
will not ruin the passage for listener.

Good lines motion Thursday...
(There isn't time to do a lot of single increment metronome
practice, but that may be fortunate for you, I find when I do
that I tend to get both tense and bored, a terrible combination).
